Alexia Benavent-Rivera is a latina artist who is Puerto Rican, Panamanian, and Ukrainian. Currently based in Florida and Georgia, Alexia’s artwork is informed by the diverse cultural background she was raised with. Drawing inspiration from a combination of traditional art from the diasporic homelands, her work is an exploration of personal experience and cultural practices. Due to the broadness of her Interdisciplinary Studies in Art and Design degree, her work is explored in a multitude of mediums from traditional painting to embroidery and digital work. Although the mediums may differ, Benavent-Rivera’s work with the concept of memories and nostalgia is a common through line. The memories depicted in her art are from a pre-digital era and serve as crucial linkages between identity and culture. The intention behind these works is not necessarily for viewers to connect with the specific imagery but rather interact with the sense of regaining lost connections to their own past. Benavent-Rivera is currently working as an MFA candidate at Florida State University. Her work has been shown at Lyndon House’s 47th Juried Exhibition (2022) where she won a Merit award. Her work has also shown in Athens Institute for Contemporary Art’s (ATHICA) juried exhibition, “Mood” (2022) as well as Ernest G. Welch’s 22nd Juried Exhibition (2020), and the Legacy Ball (2022 hosted by Black Felicity), where she won favorite artwork. Most recently her work has been shown in “Continuous Cycles” at the Working Modern Contemporary Gallery in Tallahassee (2024).
